Howard Pyle vs. Edwin Austin Abbey Style and Art - 851 Words

Background Howard Pyle (1853-1911) was an American illustrator and author who primarily specialized in books for younger readers. He taught illustration, founded his own school, and produced a number of famous students. One of his classic publications was The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood, but he remains well known for his four-volume set on King Arthur and on his illustrations of pirates, which have become iconic in popular culture (May and May). In fact, one contemporary art critic notes: He created something out of mixing something from history and made something very seductive. So seductive that no pirate ever wore anything differently. When one person can change the worlds view of something thats remarkable. All the world only recognizes pirates because of Howard Pyle (Crimmins). Pyles Art and Style- Pyle was realistic in his works, in the sense of creating images that told stories and were less interpretive and more illustrative. For example, there were few pirate drawing that were authentic, so Pyle invented the look a more romantic view that tends to be emulated in movies for costumes of Johnny Depp and Errol Flynn. Stylistically, Pyle used a number of stereotypical Gypsy elements (cape, earrings, long pants, flowing shirts), that may look iconic and romantic, but would be quite impractical for working sailors (Crimmins). We all know that our prisons are the final frontier for the socially rejected criminals and violent offenders. We know that our prisons are so overcrowded that the Supreme Court of California issued a court order to reduce the number of inmates. We know that since there are more inmates in prison the chance of getting rehabilitated is very slim. And we also know that the ratio of supervision of guard to inmate is extremely high. But do we know what goes on in our prisons and jails? We know we have prison gangs, drugs, assaults, robberies, and even murders in prison. But what happens when you mix an overcrowded prison or jail with violent, drug using, angry, abusive, gang related men with the average person who is in prison or jail for†¦show more content†¦Being a male inmate victim of rape is traumatizing since he is devalued in regard to the two primary sources of his identity: sexuality and aggression. â€Å"Sexual abuse has a special meaning for the male victim. V for Vendetta is a movie that immediately grasps the viewers attention. It has a tendency to seem twisted and dark. However, after examining the film more closely the themes began to emerge and started to make sense. V for Vendetta seems to align with Plato’s ideals making V’s actions seems less terroristic and begin to shape up to be that of a vigilante. The Allegory of the cave and V for Vendetta seem to have many similarities. V, the main character, parallels the lover of wisdom in Plato’s, The Allegory of the Cave. Following his experiences as a subject of science V has come to learn what the British government really does to its people. After returning from such a horrifying experience V has discovered the truth and sees the world around him dimmer as though he is returning to the cave. Even though they knew that her brother committed a crime, they couldnt understand why she put him in Jail. Even though they made her feel so left out, she made sure they were okay by sending them money every week because they were a poor family. I would not recommend this film to my fellow year 12 students because its predictable and a tad boring.
